Fly Fishing Clinic

Introduction to Fly Fishing

Join us to learn the basics of Fly Fishing. We start with an introduction to the equipment, rigging, and technique, and then spend time learning to cast a fly line. Apply basic fly fishing casting to different fishing tactics: shooting line, stripping streamers, and drifting dry flies. The course will be approximately 2.5 hours long. Fly fishing equipment was provided. Wear footwear that can get wet, a sun hat, and safety glasses/sunglasses. Participants can participate and learn to cast without an Ontario fishing license, however for the ‘in water’ fly fishing tactics a fishing license is required.

The Upper Ottawa River Race is comprised of multiple races, all taking place on the mighty and historic Ottawa River.

The event features kayak, canoe, outrigger, prone, and stand-up paddling (SUP) races on the Ottawa River (13km, 4 km, or kids races).

Included with registration is a race shirt (guaranteed only for registrations received by July 15), a pile of swag (we've been told it's the best race swag-bag ever), catered dinner (guest tickets available at $10/person per meal), a shuttle to pick up your vehicle (13 km), prizes and trophies in a variety of categories, great camaraderie and a full day of fun!

Kayak Fishing Tournament

Hosted by Kayak Anglers Association of the Outaouais (KAAO) for Soldier On

KAAO (Kayak Anglers Association of the Outaouais) has partnered with the Water and Dirt Festival (formerly known as the Upper Ottawa River Race) and the township of North Algona Wilberforce to bring you its 2022 Annual Kayak Fishing Tournament.

WHERE: Lake Doré (62c Township Park Rd, Eganville, ON K0J 1T0).  Free camping (tents only) at Melissa Bishop park (baseball diamond) with parking across the street.

WHEN: Saturday, August 6, 2022 (07h00-15h00)

COST: $100 (50% Payout and 50% Charity-Soldier On).  Post-Tournament meal and entertainment, Swag, and Loot Bag are included in the registration fee.

RULES:

  • This is a 5-bass Catch-Picture-Release Run-and-Gun format.  The longest stringer wins.
  • PFD must be worn AT ALL TIMES (violators will be DQ'd without warning).
  • No live bait is allowed.
  • Kayaks only (paddle, pedal, electric motor).
  • No tandem fishing.
  • Ketch boards and Hawg Troughs (clearly marked with Sharpie) are the ONLY allowed devices.
  • Pictures to be submitted via TourneyX app.
  • An identifier must be CLEARLY visible in the picture.
  • Fish must be at least 12" to be accepted.
  • The length of the fish will be rounded down to the closest 1/4".
  • Angler's hand must not be placed between the gill and the mouth of the fish nor anywhere on it's tail.
  • Fish's mouth must be closed (1" deduction if open).

What is Soldier On? 
Soldier On is a program of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) which contributes to the recovery of ill and injured CAF members and veterans by providing opportunities and resources through sport, recreational, and creative activities. Soldier On is recognized for improving the quality of life of the ill and injured and is a highly visible and integral component of the Department of National Defence, and the CAF's commitment to the care of ill and injured members. Generous Canadians support the program through donations and fundraising to the Soldier On Fund, which is managed by Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services.
 
What Does Soldier On Do?
Since 2007, Soldier On has supported over 8800 ill and injured members using sport and physical recreational activities to enable social support, build confidence in their abilities and realize their full potential. Soldier On provides members with a safe environment to challenge themselves and become inspired in ways that they may not have thought possible, contributing to and providing a gateway to enhance ones' well-being. This re-introduction to an active lifestyle provides opportunities to develop new skills, build confidence and meet peers with similar challenges. 

Does it make a difference?
Many ill/injured members credit Soldier On with helping in their recovery, overcoming their challenges, opening doors to other life opportunities, and assisting in their transition to civilian life.

Forest Lea Trail Run

Located in the heart of the Laurentian Valley, northwest of Ottawa, lies the Forest Lea trails. The trail system lies on crown land and consists of over 32km of single-track trails that are tight, technical, rocky, and rooty. This is an advanced recreational trail system. Even “easy” trails contain obstacles. The Forest Lea Trail Run primarily consists of technical singletrack. 

Distances:

There are 3 distances to choose from. The first is an entry-level event at 3 km. The second is 10 km and the third is a distance run of 28 km. All runs utilize the trails at Forest Lea, specifically mimicking the routes used by the Forest Lea Enduro race which has in the past used the same distances for their event.

Proposed 10 km route – Start loop (Out road, ski trail, Jolly Roger, Oliver's, Q Loop), Art, Jolly Roger to finish

Proposed 25 km route – Start loop, Original Red, Back Loops, Maple Syrup, Flat Pass, Jolly Roger, Finish

Forest Lea Enduro

The Forest Lea Trails are becoming widely recognized as the best technical singletrack system in Eastern Ontario, with a total of 32k of the marked trail. The FL Enduro is a trail-focused event to celebrate the Forest Lea Trails and raise funds for maintenance and development.

Participants must be self-sufficient for water and food. There is only emergency help on the trail from marshals. One water station will be at the halfway point of the 25k loop, there will be no water on the 10k loop. All race routes will be marked with coloured arrows the day before the event.

Mtn biking can be dangerous—all riders must wear a helmet, have an appropriate bike, and take responsibility for their own safety! Enduro participants will be required to sign a waiver form when they register online.

The Forest Lea Enduro is a historical race that has taken place for years through the Forest Lea Trails. These trails are renowned in the region for being some of the best riding around. Technical riding mixed with some fast-paced runs and corners. The trails welcome you to a day of exploring the forest in our own backyard. Push yourself while you enjoy the nature of Forest Lea and end the day with some lunch and celebrations.

Over the years, the Forest Lea Enduro has been hosted 15 times and attracted riders from throughout Ontario. During the week of the Water and Dirt Festival, the Enduro will have registration once again. We welcome all to come test their skills on regionally renowned singletrack mountain bike trails. Push your pace, ride those lines, shift those gears; see you at the finish, ready for a celebration!

Petawawa Extreme Slalom

Extreme Slalom Race through the Railroad Rapid on the Petawawa River Town Section.

All paddlers must register online prior to the event, no on-site registration will be available on race day.

The event briefing will be held at 9:30 a.m. Qualification Laps will be held from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon, followed by the seeded Extreme Slalom which will begin at 1:00 p.m.

The Extreme Slalom will feature 4-paddler heats, open to all ages, with separate men & women categories. The course is based on water levels and will be determined closer to the event date. Elimination from the race will be determined by participant numbers.  Details will be provided closer to the event date.

Boats must be plastic, with a maximum length of 9’6”, and designed for White Water use.

Cash prizes will be awarded as follows: 1st: $500, 2nd: $250, 3rd: $125, 4th: $45. Additionally, two bonus prizes of $100 each will be awarded to random event participants.

Petawawa Triathlon

Petawawa Triathlon posterThe Petawawa Triathlon event will have 2 separate races.

TRIATHLON: consists of a 750m swim, 20km bike ride, and 5km run. It can be done as an individual event and as a team relay.

TRY-A-TRI: Consists of a 300m swim, 10km bike, and 2 km run. Individuals only.

The Open water swim will be at Black Bay.

Early race kit pick-up will take place Friday, August 12th from 530pm to 730pm at GearHeads in Petawawa. Race Kits will also be available for pick up on race morning during check-in and body marking.

T-Shirt sizes can only be guaranteed if you register by 22 July.

All registered entrants will be emailed a Participant Information package once registration closes.

Raise a Paddle For the Animals! 

COMMUNITY RELAY RACE:

Are you ready to raise a paddle for local animals in need? Turn your passion for animals into some much-needed funds for local animals in need and join us for our Raise a Paddle For the Animals Community Relay Race happening during the Ottawa Valley Doggy Paddle on Sunday, August 14th!  

We are now recruiting adventurous community-minded animal lovers to compete in a Team Relay Race that will include both a “water and dirt” component following the paddle and lunch.

Grab a few friends, family (furry family too) or co-workers and get on board to help the animals in our Community! Teams are invited to fundraise a minimum of $250.00 to compete in our Community Relay Race! All funds raised will stay right here in Renfrew County to help the most vulnerable animals live their very best lives! 

What do you need to join? 

1. Gather a team of 3-6 participants, all ages (and animals) welcome!! 
2. Email Heather Jobe at hjobe@ontariospca.ca to reserve your spot
3. Start fundraising to raise a paddle and make a difference for animals in your community!

No SUP/kayak/canoe?  No worries! Just let us know and we can source you one! 

The winning team will take home bragging rights and the Golden Paddle Trophy to show off and cherish until next year’s Doggy Paddle!!

SAFETY:

WATER SAFETY – ALL paddlers will require a safety kit.  

  • Kayak & Canoe: whistle, bailing bucket, floating rope and be wearing a PFD/ lifejacket
  • Stand Up Paddleboard: whistle, leash, and be wearing a PFD/ lifejacket                      

Paddlers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult and wear all safety equipment.   To ensure top-notch safety for all of our guests, lifejackets are recommended for all Canine/Feline/Animal guests too!

Petawawa Bike Park Competition

This BMX Competition has 3 categories/tiers:

Advanced - Can flow/trick all lines (small, medium, large), all Ages
Amateur - Can flow/trick small and medium lines, all ages
Junior - small or medium and pump line, 3yrs to 9yrs

Each category will be held in a Jam format, each rider will be registered and given a number to place on their helmet. Each category will be allowed a specific amount of time to perform 3 or more full runs depending on the total amount of registered riders. 

Judges will rate each rider on skills (flow, style, difficulty of trick, and use of terrain) and will collectively pick the top 3 riders of each category for awards.

Bonus fact: Judges like it when you get the crowd pumped up!!!

Helmets are mandatory, and pads are recommended. Be sure to get your bike tuned up beforehand!

Be safe and ride within your skill level!
